France Enforcing French VAT Registration upon Import

Import VAT reverse charge in France was implemented January this year. Non-EU businesses without a French VAT number, must start VAT registration as soon as possible so they are able to keep importing goods into France. The change means import VAT in France is declared and paid directly to the French Tax Authority (DGFiP) and no longer to the French Customs. Reverse charge for import VAT is mandatory for businesses registered for VAT in France (including non-taxable persons who have an intra-community VAT number).

The “soft landing” period ended May so now all importers must have a French VAT registration number and this must be entered in the customs import declaration. U.S. companies importing to France need to learn about what it means to have a VAT number in France and process the correct reports. EuroVAT is happy to assist with all of your registration, VAT filings, training and mandatory paperwork. We have noticed a slower processing time at the French Tax Authorities, due to recent higher demand. Please contact us today at vat@eurovat.com and we will discuss your options and figure out the best strategy for your sales of goods to the EU.
